How to plan for your Exterior Panels

So You're Interested in Plaank Exterior Slat Wall Panels?

But have no idea where to start or what you will need? No worries! In this blog, we'll walk you through everything—what you need, how to install your panels (or what your installer might need to know), and tips to get the best results from your panels!

Where to Start

Congrats on beginning your exterior design journey! We're thrilled you chose Plaank and want to make your installation as smooth as possible.

Plaank Exterior Panels come in four stylish colours to suit any aesthetic. Here's what you'll need:

  • Joists that match the width of your space

  • Wall plugs and screws to secure your joists

  • Coloured screws to attach panels to the joists

Pro Tip: Make sure you have all of these before you begin! Check our technical sheet for instructions on how to cut the panels to size.

Our Plaank Slat Wall Panels use a tongue-and-groove system for a seamless fit. Keep in mind that you’ll need to account for panel overlap when measuring your space, so you may need more panels than expected. Use our handy box calculator on the product page to double-check your numbers!

When Is Best to Install?

Outdoors:

  • If it’s a hot, sunny day, take regular breaks in the shade and avoid leaving panels in direct sunlight while installing the joists.

  • Avoid installation in the rain, but if you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to see your results!

Indoors:

  • Make sure to check the accepted hours for DIY noise if you have neighbors.

  • Review all instructions before starting to avoid damaging your walls.

Health and Safety - The Important Bit

When using saws and drills, always:

  • Wear protective gloves and goggles

  • Use the correct drill bit

Tip: It’s helpful to have a friend assist you with lifting panels or to handle the installation while you relax! Many hands make light work.

Planning Permission

If you live in a leasehold property, you may need permission from the building owner or property management team. Make sure you have approval from the necessary parties before starting so you don't end up undoing your hard work.

Extra Materials

In addition to panels and joists, you might want to use corner or end trims for a polished finish. You can find these on the WVH website under Plaank accessories or shop for additional items [here].

DIY Skill Level

Our exterior panels are easy to install with a straightforward, step-by-step process. However, if you’re unsure or not confident in your DIY skills, hiring a contractor or builder might be a good idea. The installation should take about one day.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Panels

  • Purchase your slat panels in your chosen colour.

  • Check that you have all the tools you need to cut and install the panels.

Step 2: Measure and Cut the Joists

  • Best practice: Install on a brick wall for a sturdier fit.

  • Measure the joists match the length and height of your wall.

  • Attach joists at 450mm intervals using screws and wall plugs.

  • Leave 500mm between each screw for stability.

  • Leave a 10mm gap between the base of the panels and the floor for drainage and expansion.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the Panels

  • Ensure you have enough panels.

  • Use masking tape and a pencil to mark your cuts.

  • Use a circular saw to cut panels to the desired size.

Step 4: Install Panels onto the Joists

  • Start from a corner and screw the first panel into the joists using coloured screws.

  • Ensure your panel is straight!

  • Slot the next panel into the tongue-and-groove system for a snug fit, then drill it into place.

  • Continue until your desired space is covered.

Optional:

  • If you’re installing panels around a corner, make sure your joists are flush or use an end trim for a seamless finish.

Happy installing! We can't wait to see what you create with Plaank Exterior Slat Wall Panels.
